It turns out that my clutch is shot. This could be the end of my E36 ownership.

lame as hell. I would say plan out a good 8 hours and crack it out yourself, but I know you have been up against more than just this on the car in the past year

Why for? Not enough money for a clutch job? Also, one of my favorite things about driving an automatic (there aren't many) is that I don't need to worry about a clutch.

Well, it has 183,300 miles on it, and they quoted me $2,900 for the job. So, I'm stuck on just use that money for a new car or sink it in my car and hope nothing else goes wrong.

That's ridiculous. A clutch kit is $500, so what are they charging you, 18 hours labor? It shouldn't take that long.

$500 on the high side (turners got kits for $250), and shit just rough that flywheel up as long as all the timing pins are still in it.

Guessing a flywheel isn't made of gold, bet let's assume the clutch kit and flywheel are $900. I figured labor was $120/hr (it is at my shop) and they're still fucking you over. No other shops around to quote you, or is it not very drivable?

I drove it there and it was slipping like a motherfucker, I will have to have it towed elsewhere if I decide to go to a different place.
They said the flywheel alone was $900. I can definitely get one for less. Despite it being a dual mass flywheel.
My dad is calling them up again while I'm here at school, we'll see what they come down to.

I pulled the T56 in my Cobra with two jacks, a 2x6 to pull up on (Cobra sits to low to jack right off the ground, two inches makes a big difference *giggles*), and four jack stands. Pulled the tranny completely out, rebuilt my synchros, replaced a sheared input shaft, and a butchered clutch all by myself.
It can be done. This may sound sad, but after tearing that far into the car and a good 12 hours of labor all around (took three tries to get the tranny dialed into tolerances right) I never felt so attached to it....
Then I blew my rear end out onto the highway like three months after fixing the tranny. And flipped a lid because I had to spend about as much time pulling my IRS at that point.
Moral of the story, it can be done. Don't give up on the car for it to become a junker. Or even worse....a....a drift project. *shudders*

Believe me when I say I can't do this job in my driveway.

The number they gave me was the worst case scenario and including tax. So this could end up costing me less, and I told them to go ahead and do it.
Lets just cross our fingers and hope that the flywheel is good...

How the hell is it that expensive? I manage a Euro shop in CA, and there's no way it should cost that much. Our labor rate is $102/hr. Times 6.2 hours book for clutch & flywheel replacement = $632.40. Sachs clutch kit: $409.86. The flywheel may not even be necessary, and if it is, it'd be a good time to look into an aftermarket single-mass. The Luk dual-mass is $1076 list. Even at their labor rate and at full pop on the flywheel, it's $2230 before tax. 8% tax on the parts is around $120. Where's the rest come from? Not even low balling, I'd sell the flywheel for $830, still make adequate profit, and do that job for $1,945 out the door.
I don't generally install customer supplied parts for warranty & liability reasons, and because it's just a fact of business that we need to make money on parts, but we do make exceptions in select cases if the parts are of high quality & the customer understands that online parts houses almost never cover labor in a warranty situation. As long as you're cool with that, of course you can get a flywheel for less on the interwebs because online distributors can drastically undercut brick & mortar shops. If you can find a shop to install your parts, it could save you.
That said, it's not a difficult job. The hardest part, without a lift, will be getting to the upper bellhousing bolts, for which you'll need a very long extension with a female T45 (IIRC) Torx, and then aligning the input shaft in the clutch & pilot bearing when going back together. You'll need a 2nd person for that, but it's pretty straightforward otherwise. The exhaust comes off easily at the downpipe flange, and the driveshaft can be left bolted to the diff, just swing it to one side & secure it with a bungee. It really helps if you jack the engine up slightly at the front, otherwise it's difficult to get the bellhousing clear of the tunnel insulation.

The labor here is $120 and that number is worst case scenario(flywheel) after tax. The clutch is like $550 and the flywheel is $900
